The Finnish Painters´ Union is celebrating its 90th anniversary by staging a wide-ranging series of exhibitions throughout 2019. These exhibitions and associated events present the diversity of the art of painting and bring it to the public in 18 different locations around the country. The focus of the celebrations is the art of painting as expressed through painters, and during this anniversary year the public will have the opportunity to experience and enjoy its strength and its ability to impress.

MUSEUM EXHIBITIONS

The anniversary celebrations began in Lahti Art Museum already in the autumn 2018 when Fresh Paint in Lahti – The 90th Anniversary Exhibition of the Finnish Painters’ Union was on show.

The series of juried jubilee exhibitions continues at the Lappeenranta Art Museum with an exhibition titled Fresh Paint in Lappeenranta – The 90th Anniversary Exhibition of the Finnish Painters’ Union. The exhibition opened on 19 January 2019 and runs until 28 April 2019.

The exhibition in the Lappeenranta Art Museum includes works by the following 24 artists: Erika Adamsson (Turku), Riikka Ahlfors (Helsinki), Tyko Elo (Helsinki), Anssi Hanhela (Oulu), Selma Haro (Turku), Kaija Hinkula (Oulu), Emmu Johansson (Helsinki) , Markku Keränen (Espoo), Sari Koski-Vähälä (Helsinki), Jarmo Kukkonen (Hollola), Hannele Kumpulainen (Helsinki), Helena Laine (Pori), Riikka Lenkkeri (Mänttä), Katri Mononen (Nokia), Paula Ollikainen (Tampere) , Kimi Pakarinen (Helsinki), André Peterdi (Turku), Mari Rantanen (Stockholm, Sweden), Satu Rautiainen (Helsinki), Mikko Rekonen (Helsinki), Elina Ruohonen (Turku), Jukka Siikala (Helsinki), Ville-Veikko Viikilä ( Lahti) and Jenni Yppärilä (Tampere).

CAROUSEL

Carousel is a completely new and bold exhibition concept that will be on show at the tm•gallery in Helsinki August 15th – Sept. 8 th 2019. Every day, a new selection of art works will be displayed, with the gallery presenting works by one or three artists daily. For 25 days, visitors can experience a revolving carousel of the artworks of 59 artists.

These artists, who had to sign up to take part in the exhibitions, are members of the Finnish Painters’ Union, and were selected by means of a lottery. The concept of using a lottery enables a diverse presentation of the art of painting. At the same time, it also involves the question of how to choose artists: either by way of curating or randomly. We are waiting with great excitement for the outcome.

In October 2019, the art of painting will be presented around Finland. Local artists’ organisations in 17 different locations will hold exhibitions or other events related to painting. These exhibitions will display works created by members of the Painters’ Union who are living in the area.
